(knuckle) cutters are designed for removing unsightly knobs or stubs
from trunks and branches without leaving ugly scars, as well as for
removing roots. They are used to give a concave sharp and precise cut, and minimize damage to surrounding area when removing and styling bonsai trees.
Knob cutters make a concave cut, which heals faster than straight cuts.
The spherical blades allow for the ideal combination of strength and precision, making for a clean "biting action" into the material. The cutting blades shaped like two halves of a sphere. This shapes allow it to cut aggressively into the wood so protruding stubs, or knobs, are quickly cut away, and then leaves wound that will heal flush with the branch or trunk for minimal scaring. A Knob cutters enable you to scoop out a portion of the branch at the trunk, create a round and hollow cut so that the heals are aesthetic, unnoticeable, and least visible. This allows the healed bark to be flatter, smoother and more natural.
They may also be used as a finishing tool to remove root or trunk material in areas that are difficult to for other cutters to access, and around roots. However, knob cutters are not as sturdy as root cutters and can be damaged by pebbles and other hard material in the soil.

How to use? With a knob cutter, you hold the handles at right angles to the area you want to cut and then dive straight in to gouge out the knob or other protuberance you want to remove.

For harder woods make a series of smaller cuts to prevent damage to the tool.
To cut safely without damage, branch thickness of the branch that you want to remove should be 1/3 - 1/2 of the size of the blade.
